What is Repentance?
Suppose a man says to God, “I am guilty but will offend no more. Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do so again.” Should God then reward you on your terms, when you refuse to repent? You must decide; not I; so tell me what you know.
Job 34:33
If you believe that repentance is saying sorry for your mistakes you have not understood the Father's heart. True repentance is about so much more than just saying that you are sorry. We have all seen little children do something wrong, and when they are told off they say sorry, but we know that they don’t mean it. If we were to act that way, where would we stand with God?
Think about this for a moment. What did Jesus Christ die on the cross for? 2 Corinthians 5:10 tells us ‘For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life.’ If God had intended to save us through simply saying sorry, the same as a little child who says it but doesn't mean it, Jesus would have to die on the cross over and over again.
Repentance is about a change of mind. It is about making a decision that we will not continue to sin. Rather that we will turn away from that sin; that we will change our habits so that we do not continue to sin; that we will flee from the very thought of that sin every time it enters our minds; that we will start to realize what that sin is doing to our lives and start to hate it. Psalm 51:17 says ‘The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.’ To put it another way, we have to break the habit of sinning.
There are three sections to this bible study:
As you finish each of these sections give yourself time to stop and reflect on what you have learned. After you have spent time reflecting on all three sections, take some time to allow God to talk to you about what your next step should be.
